Who we are

Hopelynd was founded by Kellie Hetler and Kara Hanes — two photographers and mothers to daughters with disabilities who came together to fill a critical gap in their community. Drawing from their own personal experiences navigating the world with children who have disabilities, they envisioned something their community deeply needed: a space built with empathy, accessibility, and belonging at its core.

The name Hopelynd is a tribute to their daughters. It blends the middle names of Gabriella Hope and Naomi Lynne, with a "D" added to honor disability — the shared experience that gave their mission its purpose. Hope reflects strength, optimism, and the enduring belief in possibility. Lyn represents connection, heritage, and compassion. Together, the name is a reminder of why this work matters.

Hopelynd's vision is a nonprofit studio intentionally designed for people of all abilities — featuring wheelchair access, sensory-friendly lighting, and inclusive design — a place for photography, events, and connection where everyone feels seen, valued, and empowered.

Why Viewfinder

As photographers, Kellie and Kara have always loved the idea of a photo walk — exploring a city, finding beauty in unexpected places, and capturing it through a lens. But they kept coming back to the same question: why aren't these experiences designed to be accessible? Viewfinder is their answer to that question.

Supported by a grant from Downtown Grand Rapids Inc, Viewfinder is Hopelynd's first Walk & roll photography experience that brings the joy of making images to people with disabilities, in a way that is fully accessible, welcoming, and fun. It is the first step toward a larger vision of a community where everyone has the opportunity to tell their story, celebrate their perspective, and be seen.
