Raianne Richards' Story
Music saved my life. I lost my father to brain cancer when I was in the 6th grade. I had basically just started playing and during his illness and after his death playing my Clarinet gave me something positive that I could focus on and feel good about. It also gave me something I could share with others. I loved playing my keyboard and eventually started playing bass guitar and acoustic guitar. Then when I was a freshman in high school we moved to a new town. I had to completely start over. My first friends at this new school (and to this very day) were kids I met in the band room. My band director not only saw my potential but also encouraged me by giving me leadership positions first as section leader, then as drum major/student conductor. He also let me have lunch with him each day instead of the cafeteria so we could scheme about how to recruit more kids for band and chorus and he gave me so much fatherly advice and mentorship that I would not have received otherwise. Then as a junior he found out I was writing songs and that I could sing and recruited me to help with an afterschool select choir. Our band and choir both competed and took home trophies that year. The band room was my sanctuary. The friendships I made in band and the opportunities to work with and help lead the other students changed me forever. My life could have taken a very different path if I didn't have music. Music has continued to improve and enrich my life every single day since. It is my privilege and honor to help other people along their musical journey by teaching private and group lessons as well as help with BVMPAC.
