Recognizing the importance of community and growing up enjoying the stories of my two veteran grandfathers—82-year-old Donald Sattem, who served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War, and 99-year-old Lester Rygg who served in the Navy during WWII—I have launched a project to add two benches to St. Augustine’s community garden in Elkhorn, NE, as a place where veterans and non-veterans can gather to share with one another.

The Why:

Connecting with veterans and learning from their experiences is important for building relationships and understanding.
The project has the potential to positively impact mental health by providing a safe space for conversations and connections to improve the lives of everyone involved.
