More than 40 million Americans depend on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to feed themselves and their families. Now, during the government shutdown, that vital safety net has been completely halted.

At Project Restore Us (PRU), we work with families who already stretch every dollar to cover groceries. Even before the shutdown, SNAP benefits were being reduced and food costs were climbing. Now, parents who were just getting by are wondering how they’ll feed their children this week.

Our partners at Boston Community Pediatrics are getting calls from parents who have run out of SNAP funds. Food pantries that we supply across Boston, like FAVOR in Roslindale, are seeing demand surge by more than 50%. Schools and churches are reaching out for the first time, asking for help feeding their communities.

We’ve been here before. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when families lost income and food was scarce, PRU met that emergency with home-delivered, culturally relevant groceries, powered by donations from our grassroots community.
