Woven together with Fred’s story and the importance and the historical impact of his court case, are the broader issues, such as the right to due process in the Fifth Amendment, the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, and the civil liberties guaranteed to every American citizen. And what happens when things go wrong? Fred's story could be every American's story. Today in 2026.

History. Education. Advocacy. We believe words matter, and education is an important tool to help defeat xenophobia and racism. Since December 2010, we have distributed over 15,000 Toolkits to teachers in all 50 states and 12 countries worldwide. During the pandemic, we extended our Digital Toolkits to parents and families teaching kids at home. In 2026, we are updating our educational resources for teachers on the front lines of classrooms across America to include connections to present-day civil rights issues like political scapegoating, anti-immigrant sentiment, and the dangers of misinformation.

The Fred T. Korematsu Institute (KI) is a national education advocacy organization committed to promoting civic participation and education to advance racial equity, social justice, and human rights for all. Through our educational programs, media and exhibits, and speaking engagements, we inspire people and organizations to, as Fred said, “stand up for what is right.”
