What do we really understand about addiction, and what might we have gotten wrong?

Join She Unites for an educational training focused on substance use disorder, stigma, and recovery. This conversation will explore how stigma affects individuals, families, and communities and offer practical ways we can all help reduce it.

This training explores some of the reasons people may develop a substance use disorder and how stigma can affect their lives. Stigma is when people are judged, labeled, or treated differently because of something about them, such as a substance use disorder. This unfair treatment can make it harder for people to seek help and recover.

Participants will learn what stigma is, the different types of stigma, and how it can impact individuals, families, and communities. The training also provides practical ways to reduce stigma by using respectful, person-centered language and supporting recovery.

Speakers

Christina Mensinger BA, ACPS

Christina is an Advanced Certified Prevention Specialist serving ASAC as a Prevention Manager, she received her bachelor’s in early education and worked in the public-school district before transitioning into Substance Abuse Prevention with Area Substance Abuse Council. Over the last 5 and a half years, Christina’s work in prevention has included educating first responders, healthcare and caregivers on Prevention Strategies as well as building relationships with stakeholders to form a strong collaboration and trust in the community. Christina also serves as a Make it Okay Ambassador for the State of Iowa to reduce the Stigma with Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders.

Megan Drake

Megan Drake is a Prevention Specialist at ASAC, where she leads community-based education focused on substance use disorders and suicide prevention. Megan is passionate about creating healthier communities through education and collaboration. She believes that empowering individuals with knowledge and resources is fundamental to reducing stigma and promoting lifelong wellness. Megan is a QPR Gatekeeper instructor and a board member of Mental Health of America- Dubuque.
