The problem: A structural crisis with no sustained media coverage

PROVOKEDmagazine is a digital publication for women 45–70—an audience still working, caregiving, supporting families, and absorbing financial and emotional risk across every dimension of modern life. And yet this phase of life is almost entirely missing from serious journalism.

When it does appear, the coverage is fragmented: caregiving is treated as a family issue, aging as a retirement topic, mental health as a lifestyle vertical. They are rarely reported as what they actually are: a single, compounding burden carried by one woman, often simultaneously.

These are not separate issues. They are one system.

What we’re building: A standalone reporting initiative

The Midlife Infrastructure Project is a dedicated editorial beat and newsletter covering the real cost of being the one everyone relies on: caregiving, financial precarity, emotional labor, burnout, and the policy gaps that quietly depend on midlife women's unpaid work. Our reporting addresses four pillars:

Caregiving & Financial Precarity: The real cost of care—drained savings, reduced hours, retirement plans that quietly disappear.

Mental Health & Emotional Labor: Burnout, loneliness, and anxiety in midlife caregivers—reported, not minimized.

Aging Without Clichés: How systems fail women whose lives don’t fit the template.

Solutions & Civic Impact: What actually helps and who is finally paying attention.

Women are supporting adult children, caring for aging parents, managing their own health, and working longer than they planned—often all at once. The cost shows up in depleted retirement accounts, shortened earning years, untreated anxiety, and women quietly leaving the workforce years before they intended to.
