About our panel:

Magan Gonzales-Smithis a National Organizer with Public School Strong and a parent organizer with her local PSS chapter in Durham, NC. She also leads the Narrative Lab for NC Public Schools with the Public School Forum of NC. Magan’s career has been dedicated to working with communities, systems leaders, and policymakers to create stronger and more equitable educational opportunities for young people. In 2018 she worked alongside other community leaders to create and launch the Durham Public Schools Foundation (DPSF) and served as DPSF’s founding Executive Director. More recently, she led education equity strategy and programming at MDC and The Public School Forum of NC.

Suma Setty is a senior policy analyst for the immigration and immigrant families team at the Center for Law and Social Policy (CLASP) based in DC. CLASP is a national, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization advancing anti-poverty policy solutions that address structural, systemic racism and remove barriers blocking people from economic justice and opportunity. Suma is a public health and policy researcher and leads the research portfolio for the immigration team and works to connect researchers and advocates to uplift evidence-based advocacy, and advocacy-informed research.

Chris Moreno is the National Organizing Director for the National Parents Union, a national public policy and advocacy organization that represents the united, independent voice of modern American families. She recently served as Chief Community Advocacy & Impact Officer at Revolución Educativa and the Latinx Education Collaborative, nonprofits advancing Latino success in Missouri and Kansas through education advocacy and civic engagement. In the private sector, Christy spent nearly a decade leading cultural identity brands, spearheading consumer advocacy initiatives to fulfill the needs of diverse consumer bases. Christy owns Moreno Denton Language Services, an interpreting and translation firm with 25+ years of experience serving Spanish and English communication needs across medical, legal, educational, political, religious, cultural, creative, and financial sectors.

Rabbi Nancy Kasten is a Reform rabbi, community educator, volunteer, and activist, as well as a certified Jewish Mindfulness Meditation Teacher. Since moving to Dallas in 1990, Nancy has led, taught, consulted, and organized in Jewish, interfaith, and secular settings locally, nationally, and internationally. She chose her title of Chief Relationship Officer when she joined Faith Commons because she has the most fun when making connections with and among others. Nancy currently serves on the Board of T’ruah: The Rabbinic Call for Human Rights. She is a member of the U.S. Advisory Committee for Polyphony, a Nazareth-based organization that connects Arab and Jewish communities in Israel through music. She is also a member of Reform Judaism’s Commission on Social Action and serves on several national and state-based committees and core teams within the Reform Movement.

S. Gronkiewicz-Doran is an attorney, community organizer, and parent from Chicago, Illinois. When the Trump Administration targeted Chicago during Operation Midway Blitz, S joined with other neighbors to help organize parent patrols to defend against ICE presence at local schools, and has been a dedicated volunteer helping to organize around a rapid response model of community defense.

2026 has marked a pivotal shift in immigration policy. With ICE’s personnel increasing to 22,000 agents and the authorization of over $85 billion in enforcement funding, we are seeing the rise of "soft-sided" detention camps, converted warehouses in Maryland and Georgia, and a new era of "at-large" community arrests.
