The Desert Advocacy Media Network Fellowship for Desert Reporting is being developed to support rigorous, place-based journalism focused on desert regions and the communities who call them home.

Deserts are too often flattened, misunderstood, or ignored in mainstream coverage, in part because traditional news outlets serving desert regions have steadily dwindled. This means entire landscapes and communities are left undercovered. This fellowship is designed to counter that loss by creating paid space for reporting that treats deserts as complex, living places—shaped by ecology, history, culture, and power.

With the support of matching funds, contributions made during this launch phase help build the foundation of the program itself. Rather than rushing to fund a single position, we are focused on establishing a fellowship model that is durable, responsible, and accountable to the communities it serves.

The fellowship is being developed in partnership with 90 Miles from Needles: The Desert Protection Podcast and will support original reporting for publication and/or audio, with close editorial mentorship throughout the process.
