NorthWinds Symphonic Band of Kansas City

Since 2004, the NorthWinds Symphonic Band of Kansas City has brought together passionate music educators and outstanding community musicians to create dynamic, inspiring performances for audiences.

What began as a conversation among a few local band directors has grown into a vibrant ensemble known for musical excellence, artistic variety, and a deep commitment to music education. Our very first concert in October 2004 marked the beginning of a tradition that continues to thrive today.

A Community of Musicians

As openings occur, NorthWinds proudly welcomes current and retired music educators from across the Kansas City metro area and surrounding communities within a 100-mile radius. Our membership also includes exceptional musicians from the broader community and occasional college students preparing for careers in music.

Together, we share a common purpose: to continue performing at a high level while strengthening the musical life of our community.

Eclectic, Engaging Programs

Every NorthWinds concert offers something for everyone. Our programs blend:

Timeless wind band classics
Stirring orchestral transcriptions
Traditional marches
Contemporary and newly commissioned works

We also enjoy meaningful collaborations, including performances with choral ensembles and fellow instrumental groups, creating powerful musical experiences that celebrate partnership and artistry.

NorthWinds has been honored to perform at MMEA conferences and MBA conventions, reflecting the ensemble’s reputation for excellence and leadership in music education.

Investing in the Next Generation

Supporting young musicians is central to our mission. Each year, NorthWinds hosts an annual solo competition for talented woodwind, brass, and percussion students. The winner receives a college scholarship grant and the opportunity to perform as a featured soloist with the band at our season finale concert — a thrilling experience that often becomes a defining musical milestone.

Strong Educational Partnerships

NorthWinds maintains a close partnership with the North Kansas City School District, rehearsing and performing in district facilities while offering support for the NKC band programs. As available, our members collaborate with district band directors and students, reinforcing our commitment to sustaining a strong musical culture in our schools.
