After 14 years of civil conflict in Liberia throughout the 1990s, many of the country's young ex-combatants were left without social or institutional support, job opportunities, or an education. At the same time, a lack of public transportation services led these individuals to begin operating motorcycle taxis as a means of income generation and community building.

Today, these taxis have become a lifeline for 175,000 Liberians affected by the country's civil wars and is recognized by the United Nations as a form of peacebuilding. However, motorcycle taxi operators continue to face social stigma and institutional barriers.

Engines for Change is partnering with Liberia's Platform for Dialogue and Peace and the University of St. Andrews' Center for Peace and Conflict Studies to raise awareness and support for these motorcycle taxi operators.
