This virtual event will be packed with great information for families who have a loved one with Down syndrome or Down syndrome and Autism.

Dr. Nicole Baumer is a child neurologist / neurodevelopmental disabilities specialist at Boston Children's Hospital and an Assistant Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Baumer is Director of the Boston Children's Hospital Down Syndrome Program. She completed medical training at Harvard Medical school, pediatrics training at Massachusetts General Hospital, and Neurodevelopmental Disabilities Training at Boston Children’s Hospital. Dr. Baumer also studied Special Education, and has a Masters Degree in Education from Harvard Graduate School of Education. She specializes in clinical care of children with Down syndrome, autism, ADHD, and other neurodevelopmental and behavioral disorders. Her research is focused on neurodevelopment in Down syndrome, and on interventions to optimize health, learning, and development. Dr. Baumer’s older sister, Heather, has Down syndrome and has been a huge inspiration in her life and career.

Individuals with co-occurring Down syndrome and autism (DS-ASD) face additional challenges that can be complex and require specific targeted interventions. Key areas impacted include behavior challenges, communication, and sensory needs. Individuals with DS-ASD may also have higher risk of certain medical conditions throughout the lifespan. In her presentation, Down Syndrome and Autism: updates, strategies, and future directions, Dr. Baumer will focus on current updates, diagnostic and intervention strategies, and future directions to support individuals with DS-ASD.

Monica Mann is the Director of Family Services at Eli's Village. Early in life, she realized that it takes a village to support any family. However, that statement may mean even more when a member of that family has an exceptional support need. As a sister to two siblings who happen to have Down Syndrome, she has met many people throughout her life who had a passion for supporting individuals with disabilities and their families. The village that has supported her family over time has taught her to want to make this world a better place. It also made her see the importance of helping to break down potential barriers for others, in order to help ensure everyone can live an exceptional life regardless of abilities.

As a result, she earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Longwood University before starting her career in Developmental Services over ten years ago. She started her journey working in residential services before transitioning to case management in 2021. In addition, Monica spent time volunteering with organizations such as Camp Easter Seals UCP, Special Olympics, and Challenger Little League.

In her presentation, Planning for Your Child's Future: Live the Life Imagined, Monica will provide families with essential information for developing a comprehensive plan for individuals with special needs. It covers information on financial planning, legal planning and benefits, and support planning. Topics include creating and funding trusts, understanding SSI and Medicaid benefits, and navigating legal choices like guardianship. It also highlights financial options, including ABLE accounts, that work in conjunction with support services. Attendees will gain valuable insight to craft a comprehensive plan that will help meet their loved ones needs over their lifetime.
