To clarify, in the U.S. an “at-risk” student is a term used to describe someone who requires temporary or ongoing intervention in order to succeed academically or personally. “At risk” students, also referred to as “at-risk” youth, are adolescents who are less likely to transition successfully into adulthood to achieve economic self-sufficiency. Characteristics of “at-risk” students include emotional or behavioral problems (to include criminal acts), truancy, below average academic performance, and those expressing a desire to disconnect from the school environment.
