A long time ago (well, in 2008 to be exact) in a not-so-far away place (Fishers, Indiana) the vision of kids being surrounded by caring adults was born; the school would be a place where kids would thrive not only academically, but socially and emotionally.
Students were recommended for mentoring due to failing grades, disciplinary problems, or life crisis; kids who might have been considered "high risk". Fast forward several years, add social media, increased screen time, pressure to achieve and an ever-increasing disconnected generation and the status of "high risk" applies to each and every one of our kids.
"America's newly identified at-risk group is preteens and teens from affluent, well-educated families. In spite of their economic and social advantages, they experience among the highest rates of depression, substance abuse, anxiety disorders, somatic complaints, and unhappiness of any group of children in this county"~~S.S.Luthar (2005)
Today, almost 300 students are recommended for mentoring each school year. YMI recruits, trains and matches volunteer mentors to meet weekly with their student during the school day; YMI Campus Coordinators facilitate, schedule and support 300 matches every week to ensure all mentoring relationships are thriving and desired outcomes are achieved.
When you financially partner with YMI, you are directly responsible for making these statements a reality for Fishers youth....
"Having a YMI mentor really helped me build up my self-esteem and helped me cope with my home life. She was a amazing listener and helped me with anything I needed."
"Having a YMI mentor Helped me get along better with people, keep me out of trouble, keep me focused on school, and to know how to ask for help when in need."
"Helps me when I am having a bad day. I can forget about it and talk it out. She helps with problem solving."
"Ymi gave me a place to explore who I was. It opened so many doors and allowed me to notice my own self worth. I wouldn't be doing aswell as I am now if it wasn't for ymi"
"not only did it help me through stressful times but i made a new best friend"
