My name is Niyomugabo John, and I am a 22-year-old high school student from Kyankwanzi District, Uganda.

I was born in Kamukanga Village on January 1, 2004, into a humble farming family with roots connected to both Uganda and Rwanda. I grew up alongside my two brothers and two sisters in a simple rented home where life centered around farming, faith, and working together as a family.

From a young age, I loved mathematics, science, building things, and learning how electricity worked. My dream has always been to become an engineer.

My parents encouraged me to value education, work hard, and always have humanity toward other people.

But life changed suddenly during my teenage years.

When I was 16 years old, my father died after a motorcycle accident while returning home one rainy night from Bukwiri Town. After several days in the hospital, we received the heartbreaking news that he had passed away.

About one year later, during the COVID-19 period, my mother also became seriously ill after repeated hospitalizations and later passed away as well.

Losing both parents within such a short time deeply affected my family emotionally and financially. My younger siblings were taken in by our aunt, who has struggled to care for all of us while also supporting her own family.

For a period of time, my education stopped completely because there was no longer enough money for school fees, rent, food, and daily needs.

I began working any jobs I could find in order to survive and try to save money for school. I worked on construction sites, brick laying sites, digging, and maize plantations.

Even during those difficult years, I never fully gave up on my education or my dream for the future.

🌍 Why I Started Young Green Hands Initiative Uganda

While studying at Extreme High School, I participated in the Environmental Conservation Club, where I was encouraged to take part in environmental and community activities by school director Mr. Segawa Ephraim.

Through this experience, I developed a deeper passion for environmental conservation, sustainable agriculture, youth empowerment, and community service.

That inspiration eventually led me to start Young Green Hands Initiative Uganda:

A grassroots youth-led initiative focused on environmental conservation, climate awareness, sustainable agriculture, food security, and community empowerment.

Growing up in a farming community, I witnessed how poverty, poor harvests, environmental degradation, and lack of opportunities continue to affect many families. I also realized that many young people feel hopeless because they lack guidance, support, and opportunities to participate in positive community activities.

Through Young Green Hands Initiative Uganda, we are working to help change that.

🌿 Distributes fruit trees and promotes home gardening

🌿 Supports families with practical agricultural knowledge

🌿 Encourages unity, volunteerism, and leadership among youth

So far, we have already supported local families through vegetable gardening education, fruit tree planting, environmental sensitization, and youth outreach activities within our communities.

🌱 Our Vision for the Future

My dream is not only to complete my own education and become an electrical engineer, but also to continue growing Young Green Hands Initiative Uganda into a larger movement that empowers young people and supports vulnerable families across more communities.

I hope to continue expanding environmental education, sustainable farming programs, youth mentorship, and community-based projects that create long-term positive change.

I also hope to support my siblings in completing their education and help improve the lives of families facing struggles similar to my own.
