The historic Dakota Theatre, an iconic landmark in Yankton, SD, is one of the West’s oldest performing arts centers. Built in 1902, it has entertained audiences in the historic Meridian District for over 120 years. With its rich history and architectural beauty, the theatre has been a venue for countless memorable performances, community events, and educational programs.

The Dakota Theatre, operated by the non-profit organization Onward Yankton, is dedicated to providing entertainment and cultural opportunities for all citizens of the greater Yankton region. We believe the arts strengthen our community by inspiring, uniting, and educating children and adults of all backgrounds.

Campaign Objectives

Restoration and Renovation:
- Preserve the historic charm of the Dakota Theatre by undertaking necessary structural repairs, restoring the façade, and refurbishing the interior to its former glory.
Technology Upgrades:
- Modernize the theatre with state-of-the-art lighting, sound systems, and digital projection capabilities to enhance the overall audience experience.
Program Enhancement:
- Expand our educational outreach and community engagement programs, ensuring that the Dakota Theatre remains a vibrant hub for the arts and culture in Yankton.
Endowment Fund:
- Establish an endowment to ensure the long-term financial stability of the Dakota Theatre, allowing us to continue offering diverse programming and maintain the facility.
