FROM FILMMAKER:

Hi friends, my name is Nnamdi Kanaga, and I am an independent filmmaker living and working in Montana. I am raising funds to bring my new short film, The Last Big Sky, to life.

Over the past few years, I have been committed to telling meaningful stories from and within Montana. In 2020, I wrote and directed The Hail Mary, which became the first Montana-made film with an all-Black lead cast. That project affirmed my belief that powerful, culturally specific stories can and should be told here, and that Montana’s landscape is large enough to hold many voices.

I later wrote, directed, and produced my debut feature film, Water Girl. The film screened in Bozeman and Helena to a strong community turnout, and the response reaffirmed the importance of independent filmmaking rooted in honesty, culture, and emotional depth. Those screenings were not just about showing a film, but about gathering people together and sharing stories that resonate beyond borders. Water Girl has since screened in over 10 countries, winning awards including Best Picture and Best Narrative Feature film.

The Last Big Sky is my next step forward. It is a deeply intimate, character-driven short film about a mother who must make the hardest decision of her life after her son collapses during a football game and is placed on life support. Set in Montana, the film explores grief, faith, and love beneath the vastness of the Big Sky.

As a Nigerian filmmaker who has made Montana home, my work often lives at the intersection of cultures, belief systems, and place. This film reflects that intersection while remaining grounded in the quiet, human moments that define loss and resilience.

I am committed to keeping this film independent so its emotional truth and artistic integrity remain intact. Funds raised through this campaign will go directly toward production and post-production costs, including location support, crew wages, sound design, color grading, and festival preparation. The Last Big Sky is scheduled to shoot in Dillon, Montana, in April 2026 and will be submitted to film festivals nationally and internationally.
