A Letter from Gabby and Justin Leyva-Manriquez

In the winter of 2022, we opened the doors to our urban art gallery and supply store in the city of Pomona. What started as a bold step into the local arts scene quickly stirred strong reactions—both supportive and critical. That friction only fueled our passion. Our space began attracting youth and adults from all over the West Coast, and it became clear that we had tapped into something meaningful.

We knew we wanted to do more than sell art supplies—we wanted to make a difference, especially for our youth. In 2023, we launched a free 2–3 month art class series. With a solid reputation in the graffiti art community, we felt a responsibility to use our platform for good. Thanks to support from God's Pantry and a grant from the City of Pomona, we were able to turn our vision into reality.

For the first time, we created the kind of space we wish had existed when we were growing up: a safe, welcoming place for young people to explore art, ask questions, and stay off the streets. We hosted 22 students between the ages of 12 and 19. Each student left with not only new skills but also supplies and assignments to keep growing. Watching them create and connect was deeply emotional—and transformative for us. We knew this was our calling.

Now, in June 2025, it's official: Urban Rising LA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

And this is where we need your help. Our goal is to raise $25,000 over the next 12 months to expand our free art classes, provide supplies, and maintain a creative, safe space for our youth.

Every donation—whether financial or in-kind—is tax-deductible and goes directly toward empowering the next generation of artists.

Our Mission:

"To empower underprivileged and at-risk youth to realize their full potential through the vibrant world of street art. We provide mentorship, classes, art therapy, art education, and hands-on internships with local galleries, museums, and professional street artists. By connecting young creatives with sanctioned public arts projects, we aim to foster self-expression, build confidence, and create pathways to personal and professional growth. Together, we strive to transform our communities through the power of art, inspiring the next generation of artists to make a meaningful impact."
