This October, I’ll be running the Bank of America Chicago Marathon in support of the New York State Youth Leadership Council (NYSYLC), an organization that changed my life.

When I was applying to college as an undocumented student, the future felt uncertain. I wasn’t sure if attending college would even be possible. Out of all the scholarships I applied for, NYSYLC was the only organization that believed in me and awarded me a scholarship.

Through their summer program, I connected with mentors and other students who shared similar experiences. They introduced me to opportunities and resources I never knew existed and showed me that pursuing a college education was possible despite the barriers I faced. Because of their support, guidance, and belief in me, I was able to begin my college journey and eventually earn my bachelor’s degree.

Now, I have the opportunity to give back.

Running 26.2 miles in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon is more than a personal goal. it’s my way of supporting the organization that helped open doors for me. I want other undocumented students to have the same opportunities, encouragement, and community that NYSYLC gave me.

Every donation, no matter the amount, helps NYSYLC continue providing scholarships, leadership development, mentorship, and advocacy for undocumented youth across New York.
