Remembering Michael Rawitz
Fairview Lake was a lifelong source of joy and belonging for Michael Rawitz. He first came to camp in 1952, shortly after moving to Newark with his mother. What began as a summer getaway soon became the heart of his youth — a place where he discovered sailing, found mentors who shaped his life, and made friendships that lasted for decades.
Michael spent nine summers on staff, often arriving early to help prepare camp for the season. He shared his passion for competitive riflery as the riflery director for many years. He loved the hard work, the laughter shared around campfires, and the calm of the lake where he honed his sailing skills under the guidance of trusted mentors. Eventually, he became the camp’s sailing master, sharing that same joy and freedom on the water with younger campers.
In later years, Michael continued to give back as a volunteer on the Fairview Lake Board of Managers, ensuring that future generations could experience the same sense of connection and adventure that had meant so much to him. His kindness, humor, and love for camp — and especially for the time he spent under sail on Fairview Lake — will always be remembered by those who knew him.
