Founded by a group of dedicated locals, the club encourages youth and people with disabilities to reach new heights, both physically and personally. Yet, they face incredible challenges, from inadequate gear to lack of administrative resources. At the end of 2023, Denominator journeyed to the Rwenzori Mountains in Uganda, where they met Sam, an exceptional guide, athlete, and community leader. Sam's story begins in the small town of Kalongo, in northern Uganda's Agago district, nestled at 1,650 meters. Growing up during the tumultuous times of the Lord's Resistance Army, Sam saw many young lives disrupted by war, with many children forced into becoming soldiers. To escape this fate and find a path forward, he joined the government army at a young age, learning to read and write. The mountains became both his escape and his training ground, where he honed his running skills. Sam's life changed when he met John Hunwicks, director of Rwenzori Trekking Services. With John's guidance, Sam trained to become a professional mountain guide, pushing himself to new heights. He ran the trails solo, and then alongside fellow guides, achieving an incredible ascent of Margherita Peak (5,109 meters) in just over 16 hours. This achievement, and others, inspired the Rwenzori Mountains Runners Club—a movement to unlock the potential of local runners and uplift the community. WHAT’S RWENZORI MOUNTAINS RUNNER CLUB? The Rwenzori Mountains Runners Club is dedicated to promoting physical activity and healthy lifestyles, particularly among youth and disabled individuals in Western Uganda's mountain communities. The club was founded by seven locals who undertook a remarkable challenge: climbing four summits, including Margherita Peak, despite harsh weather, mud, and limited gear. Their journey inspired others to believe that great things are possible, even in the face of adversity. CHALLENGES THEY FACE: However, the runners face many challenges, including a lack of equipment. Most members do not have proper mountain running shoes and often climb in rubber boots. The harsh weather and rugged terrain make it essential to have better gear, such as waterproof clothing, GPS devices, and cameras to document their achievements. Improved equipment would significantly enhance their performance and safety.
