Helena Masłowska's Story

This story cannot be forgotten, and it deserves to reach beyond just our local family community. You've come across the profile of someone living in Poland, but with Kazakh roots. My family was deported there during World War II, and our ancestors had to build villages from scratch, starting in the middle of nowhere with only a sign marking the village number back in 1936. Today, I am here happily thanks to the opportunity my parents had to move under a scholarship and repatriation program to Poland. They put in a tremendous effort, sending dozens of letters to different cities in Poland, hoping for a permanent place here. They passed a Polish language test at a level that allowed them to make this move, and at just 18 years old, they made the brave decision to relocate 4,000 kilometers from home. Here, they practically started from scratch and built a future for my sister and me. They have also helped many others who wanted to move or who, as neighbors, needed assistance here in Poland. Not all my family members have had the same luck or opportunity. During a recent trip to Kazakhstan, we brought whatever we could, including buying a few pieces of furniture for their home. This year, I met the other part of my family and saw the conditions in which they have to live. I want to encourage my younger relatives to pursue studies in Poland, but the lack of information there is a significant obstacle. What I’ve shared here is only a small part of the story. I want people to know that some of us come from very diverse backgrounds, and I’d like to have as positive an impact as possible by supporting Denominator in his project that backs a running club in Rwenzori in achieving their dreams. Since I have a relatively large online community, I’m adding the link to the fundraiser here. I can’t change someone’s future alone, but together, we can make a difference!
