A deep love for music and community sparked an unforgettable journey last summer through southern Colorado and northern New Mexico. While visiting friends in Red River, a couple had the chance to see Michael Martin Murphey in concert—BBQ included—and eagerly said yes.

At the show, amidst the usual t-shirts and merchandise, one item stood out: a guitar with the lyrics to Wildfire, Michael Martin Murphey’s iconic song, written around the edge of its face.

Immediately, they knew this guitar belonged in Wimberley’s vibrant music and songwriter community. They purchased it, recognizing it could serve a greater purpose. The proceeds supported the Michael Martin Murphey Foundation, which helps preserve the stories of the American West. But they had an even bigger vision—to bring the guitar back to Wimberley and use it to raise funds for a local nonprofit.

When they asked Michael Martin Murphey to sign it, he added the words “Helping Wimberley” on the back. Upon hearing their intention to donate the guitar rather than keep it, he wrote an additional message: “It is better to give.”

Now, this one-of-a-kind guitar is being donated to support The Watershed Association and its mission to protect Wimberley’s rivers and streams. This special auction is an opportunity to own a unique piece of music history while making a meaningful contribution to local conservation efforts.
