We’d love to see you at the Hogan Ballroom at Holy Cross College on Sunday, April 19th for annual fundraising event - a delightful radio play: "Castaways & Coconuts: A Gilligan's Island Parody." A two-act one hour radio play performed by the Audio Journal 'radio active theatre' volunteers. Your support will help fund our amazing radio reading broadcasts and podcasts for the blind and visually impaired of Worcester County. Our programs prevent alienation and connect individuals to their community.

WHERE/WHEN: Sunday, April 19th at Holy Cross College in Worcester (1:00 - 4:00 pm): 1 College St. in Worcester, MA.

WHAT: Live Radio Play, Raffles, & Live Auction: The experience will give guests a fun, comedic night to remember. A Live two-act, one hour radio play ... Also, you won’t want to miss the Raffle prizes, LIVE Auction and invaluable opportunity to chat with fellow supporters of Audio Journal.

SEATING: Seating at Castaways and Coconuts will be theatre style in the HC Hogan Ballroom.

Dress Code: Business Casual

Parking: Once you arrive at the College on College St, go up the hill to the last gate on the left. The Hogan Center is the second building on the left and the large parking lot is on the right. If you need assistance when you arrive, please let us know in advance. Once you enter the building, there are about 5 steps to the first floor. The Hogan Ballroom is immediately on the left once you go up the steps to the first floor. If you are in need of an elevator, there is a ‘LIFT’ just to the right of the steps.

1:00 pm Appetizers and Refreshments: Doors will open at 1:00 pm with the Cash Bar & Appetizers: (NO Sit-Down Dinner this year): Open Cash Bar with hors d’oeuvres & Appetizers (including vegetarian).

2:00 pm Show: Shop will begin promptly at 2:00 pm - "Castaways & Coconuts" will be a Two-Act ONE HOUR show beginning at 2:00 with a 15-minute intermission. Show will conclude with a LIVE Auction at 3:15 pm.

Audio Journal is generically known as a radio reading service for the blind. Others we serve are described as “print-disabled.” Whether it be Parkinson’s disease, traumatic brain injury or another disability, these individuals have difficulty accessing print material. Listeners hear broadcasts via a smart speaker, smart phone, computer, telephone, cable TV, or a special receiver tuned to Audio Journal’s frequency. Most programming is available as archived ‘podcasts’ on our website and Smart Phone Applications on both iPhone and Android.

Currently, we have over 180 volunteers, including 11 Board members, young adult interns from MCB, Perkins School, Shrewsbury High School, and three blind individuals. Together, they read over 100 publications, which include local newspapers, magazines, books, and grocery flyers. Our volunteers contribute a total of 5,376 hours annually. In addition, we produce 292 hours of original programming each month, spanning 56 different programs. The role of our volunteers is crucial; we believe we serve and engage two communities: the listeners and the volunteers. Audio Journal fosters a sense of community across both groups and brings meaningful experiences to each.

Funding comes from the Memorial Foundation for the Blind, the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind; local sponsors: Unibank, Country Bank, bankHometown, Archstone Financial, Seven Hills Foundation, Schwartz Foundation, District 33A Lions Clubs, Greater Worcester Community Foundation, and many local individuals.
