Dear Friend,

Thank you for your past support of this community—of Women Writing for (a) Change, Jacksonville. Whether you have participated as a writer, artist, editor, donor, art exhibit attendee, event participant, or community collaborator, we are grateful for your contribution. You have helped us build a stronger, wider, more accessible, more diverse, more connected, and more conscious community through the art and practices of writing.

That is our mission.

Today, that mission is even more important, as we have seen the words "women," "BIPOC," "gender," "queer," "equality," and "diversity" struck from grants, government websites, college curricula, and funding applications. We’ve seen community writing groups defunded and artists’ work removed from walls. It is devastating.

And yet we carry on—joyfully—as an act of resistance and rebellion. This is the philosophy of one of our heroines, Amanda Nguyen, author of Saving Five, who recently came to speak in Jacksonville. We take her lead as someone who endured a terrible assault and transformed it into something powerful: legal protections for women and all marginalized communities harmed by the system.

This is our goal, too. So we gather to write, share our stories, listen deeply to one another, celebrate each other’s work and messages, and invite others who might benefit from this support. As one of our writers said after our recent Public Readaround, "We are hardwired for storytelling and this was just magical." That's the kind of magic we want to create—and we're working on it!

We've Created Some Magic This Year

This year we’ve offered 32 classes and events with over 500 attendees—and we’re not done yet. We’ve lifted nearly 100 artists and writers through our annual anthology, led by Managing Editor Jordy/n Bowen and a team of more than 20 editors, including high school and college students gaining professional skills. We will soon share this anthology at our Annual Release Party at Eartha’s Farm and Market, where we will reach even more members of our community. We also trained a new cohort of Conscious Feminine Leaders, bringing three more skilled facilitators—Autumn, Olivia, and Katie—into the community to strengthen connection and care.

But it’s not just about the numbers. We believe, as another one of our heroines, adrienne maree brown, reminds us: “Small is good, and small is all.” We will continue to do our part—an inch wide and a mile deep here in Jacksonville—using the tool of writing to help build community.

Our funding comes from tuition, literary grants, book sales, and individual donations. We have not done this work alone. We are grateful for our donors’ generosity—including our Board, which contributes at 100% to support our Emerging Writer Fellowship.
