September is Hunger Action Month, a nationwide effort to raise awareness about hunger in America and inspire action. Every action―big or small―is one step closer to an America where no one is hungry. When people are fed, futures are nourished, and we can all reach our full potential.

Family Kitchen provides nutritious meals to anyone in need in a safe and caring environment. In the first 8 months of 2025, our team here at Family Kitchen has distributed over 110,000 meals to Central Oregon community members struggling with hunger and food insecurity. Family Kitchen is unique in that we promise to feed anyone who walks through our doors. It doesn’t matter who you are, or what your situation is, we will be there with a tasty, homemade meal.

Did you know that 32% of our neighbors in Deschutes County face financial hardship? The ALICE report (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) from 2023 showed that one in three households here in Central Oregon are forced to make impossible choices — like deciding whether to pay for utilities or a car repair, or whether to buy food or fill a prescription. Workers below the ALICE threshold often perform the jobs that keep our economy functioning smoothly — they are child care providers, food service workers, cashiers, personal care aides, delivery drivers, and more. Their stories capture the systemic and structural barriers to financial stability, and the struggles and resilience of families experiencing financial hardship.
