After undergoing open-heart surgery, 12-year-old Ellie Bekkerus knew what was crucial in her recovery. The M Health Fairview Masonic Children's Hospital Child Life Department's Facility Dog Program helped her in every aspect, physically, mentally and emotionally to return to strength and get back to being an active kid.

Ellie's recovery proceeded as well as possible thanks to the Facility Dog Program and their handlers, the Certified Child Life Specialists. These incredible canines are sure to make a child's hospital stay more enjoyable, whether it's through walks, cuddles, fetch games, or teaching tricks!

Besides working with the dogs, the program also manages the Zucker Suite Studio, where Fern appears in a number of interactive presentations via ZTV for the kids who can't leave their rooms while they're there. Throughout the hospital, they organize a lot of special events to assist patients in relaxing and diverting their attention from whatever difficulties they may be facing. On a regular basis, they give patients gifts and crafts. It is common to find the Facility Dogs dressed in different themes on most days, typically ready to show you a trick or two!

Ellie's mission is all about giving back to a program that truly turned things around for her during one of her toughest times! After her surgery, when Ellie was feeling pretty down, the amazing Facility Dogs and their dedicated team went above and beyond to lift her spirits. They became like family, creating an incredible bond that will last a lifetime!

Not only did Ellie have a fantastic experience with them, but she also made some unforgettable friendships with two awesome Gopher football players, Coleman Bryson and Darius Green. They visited the Zucker Suite Studio on ZTV to play BINGO with the patients and Fern, and Ellie found the courage to go downstairs and meet these remarkable guys. The connection she formed with them is something special that she cherishes!

Thanks to this program, Ellie has these fantastic role models in her life, and she shows her gratitude every single day. How amazing is that?

Ellie came up with the idea to try auctioning off past Gopher players, who are now professional, memorabilia. Besides these items, she is looking to add anything sports related! She is a huge sports fan and is eager to connect with other sports enthusiasts in Minnesota, particularly Gopher fans. Ellie was involved in football from 4th to 7th grade but had to stop due to her heart conditions. However, her enthusiasm for football and all sports continues to be unwavering. Currently, Ellie is involved in taking film for the football team, as well as playing basketball and softball. In addition to her sports involvement, she also holds a part-time job and serves as a junior board member for a local dog rescue. Despite facing challenging situations, Ellie finds solace and joy in sports, using them to lift her spirits and brighten her days.

All proceeds raised will go directly to the M Health Fairview Masonic Children's Hospital Child Life Department's Facility Dog Program.
