Our son Riley was born on New Year's Day in 2018. From the moment he was born, we knew his little body was different, but we didn't know why. Two years later, Riley spiked a fever of 102 degrees that lasted nine months straight. In our search to bring his fever down, we finally got an answer to our underlying concern. Riley was diagnosed with Tatton Brown Rahman Syndrome (TBRS). Not long after, we found the TBRS Community, a nonprofit that fights for kids like our son.

TBRS is an ultra rare genetic disease caused by a (mostly spontaneous) variant in the DNMT3A gene. Discovered in 2014, there are an estimated 500 diagnosed people in the entire world. Individuals with TBRS share three primary symptoms: overgrowth, intellectual disability, and recognizable facial features. It also touches nearly every system in the body, showing up as autism, heart defects, seizures, cancers, orthopedic issues, and more.

TBRS is so rare, and so new, that we're still learning what it really means for kids like Riley. One recent discovery hit close to home for us: 54% of the 200 patients in the TBRS Patient Registry have been diagnosed with a heart condition or structural abnormality. That knowledge means Riley's heart is now checked regularly, before anything has a chance to become a problem. This discovery has also already made a difference for another family in our community. The new monitoring protocol caught a heart defect in a girl that no one knew was there. She was then able to have interventions before it became a serious, life threatening, risk. This is exactly why the research the TBRS Community supports matters so much to us.

The TBRS Community is dedicated to uplifting families affected by the syndrome and advancing research toward effective interventions. It is because of the research they have supported - and the network of families, clinicians, researchers, and stakeholders they have fostered - that we know so much about Riley’s health today. This research, community, and guidance touches every point of Riley's journey, both medical and beyond.
