New Perceptions was founded by a group of concerned parents in 1952 who wanted services for their special needs children that were scarce in the community. The organization began as Riverside School in the basement of the First Presbyterian Church in Covington. A similar school, Good Counsel, opened soon after in two locations: Corpus Christi Church in Newport and St. Aloysius School in Covington. Both schools grew to be successful and wanted to better serve their clients, so in 1966, the two schools merged as Riverside-Good Counsel. Two decades later, the organization’s name was changed to better reflect its growth, expanded services, and mission: New Perceptions. Thanks to parents who wanted the best for their children, individuals in Northern Kentucky with special needs were given opportunities for education, growth, and employment that continue to this day.

New Perceptions has long been a pillar of support for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) in Northern Kentucky. Our mission—to promote the welfare of children and adults with I/DD by providing opportunities for education, growth, and employment—has been instrumental in fostering a more inclusive, thriving community. Through our programs for both children and adults, we empower individuals to reach their maximum potential, creating ripples of positive impact throughout the region.

Building a Strong Foundation for Children

New Perceptions’ early childhood programs prepare young children for preschool, ensuring they develop the foundational skills necessary for lifelong learning. By addressing developmental needs early, we help children gain confidence, communication abilities, and social skills that set them up for success. These early interventions not only benefit the children themselves but also support families, educators, and future employers by fostering independence and capability from the start.

Creating Opportunities for Adults

Our adult programs—the Learning Center, Work Center, and Supported Employment—serve as pathways for individuals with disabilities to achieve meaningful personal and professional growth.

The Learning Center provides educational opportunities in literacy, math, and life skills, helping individuals gain independence and navigate daily life with greater ease. Through classroom instruction and community outings, participants strengthen their ability to engage with the world around them.
The Work Center offers hands-on job training in a supportive environment, helping individuals develop the skills needed for the workforce. Here, participants gain valuable experience, preparing them for employment opportunities that align with their strengths and interests.
Supported Employment connects adults with disabilities to local businesses, ensuring they receive the training and accommodations needed to thrive in competitive work settings. With ongoing job coaching and support, these individuals become reliable and dedicated employees, contributing to the economic growth of Northern Kentucky.

Strengthening the Community

By equipping individuals with the skills they need to learn, work, and engage with the world, New Perceptions plays a direct role in revitalizing the Northern Kentucky community. Our programs help businesses find dedicated employees, reduce barriers to workforce participation, and encourage inclusivity across industries. Furthermore, as individuals gain independence and financial stability, they also contribute as active consumers and engaged citizens.
