Empowering Kids Through Healthcare: The Shared Mission of HUGS and Iron Lady Foundation

At first glance, the partnership between HUGS and the Iron Lady Foundation may seem unexpected — one serves children in Guatemala with life-changing facial surgeries, while the other supports women and children in India with healthcare, education, and essential resources. But at their core, both organizations share the same mission: to empower and uplift children through access to healthcare and the chance for a brighter future.

HUGS (Help Us Give Smiles), a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing these surgeries at no cost to the families, sends volunteer medical teams to underserved communities worldwide. Their mission is to restore not just smiles, but confidence, dignity, and hope.

Iron Lady Foundation - Founded in 2024 by Rashi Mehta in memory of her mother, Dr. Leela Mehta, Iron Lady Foundation is a nonprofit organization working to uplift women and children across underserved communities in India. Through programs focused on education, healthcare, economic empowerment and access to basic necessities, the foundation is committed to building stronger futures and creating lasting, community-led change.

About The Volunteer Surgeons At L&P Aesthetics

For over 20 years, Dr. David Lieberman has been volunteering with HUGS by spending 10 days per year in Guatemala, Ecuador, or Vietnam. Dr. Sachin Parikh joined the organization in 2020 and has since been on five missions. The two surgeons, also founders of L&P Aesthetics, along with other volunteer surgeons from around the world, provide facial reconstruction treatments to children who would otherwise not have access to this life-changing care.

Drs. Lieberman & Parikh will travel with HUGS to Guatemala in late September 2025 to perform a complicated surgery called microtia repair. Microtia is a congenital condition in which the ear is underdeveloped, to varying degrees. Some patients are born with minor deformities, but still have full hearing, while others suffer more prominent hearing loss and smaller outer ears.

In the US, surgery for microtia can cost an average of $40,000. For the same amount, HUGS surgeons, including Drs. L&P, can perform surgeries for nearly 60 children in Guatemala, changing patients' lives. These patients are often seen by the doctors year after year, getting check-ups on their previous surgery and making any necessary adjustments, creating lasting relationships with patients and their families.
