Why this night matters

Flagstaff is a ski town where skiing is getting harder to afford.

A season on the mountain runs well past what many Northern Arizona families can absorb. Passes, gear a kid outgrows in a year, race fees, travel. Before a single athlete clicks into a binding, FSST pays roughly $20,000 a year to Arizona Snowbowl in lane fees, coach passes, and lift access. For a family already stretched, a child who loves this sport can lose it for reasons that have nothing to do with talent or heart.

That gap is what our Athlete Scholarship Fund exists to close.

Two seasons ago, siblings joined FSST. They had come through a hard start and into the care of a local family who stepped forward to give them a home. When they first arrived on the mountain, they were quiet. Guarded. They watched more than they skied.

Program costs would have put the team out of reach. The scholarship fund covered it.

Two seasons later, they show up before anyone asks them to. They have friends here. They yell for each other at the finish line. Our coaches will tell you the change came from something simple and hard to teach anywhere else: you fall down a mountain, and you get back up, and you do it again next weekend.

That is what the fund makes possible. Not just participation. Belonging.

It works the other direction too. When a family hits sudden hardship mid-season, a job lost, a year that turns over without warning, scholarship support keeps their athlete on the team. One steady thing in a season where not much else is steady.

These are not exceptional cases. This is our community.

For 59 years FSST has been Arizona's only competitive junior alpine program, serving nearly 180 athletes each season across alpine racing, intro to race, all mountain skiing, and snowboarding. We are a 501(c)(3), and nights like this are how the scholarship fund gets funded.
