Your participation directly supports Project Shea, a collaborative effort between the Hearts in Harmony Foundation and the Mayo Clinic's Sudden Death Genomics Lab, led by Dr. Michael Ackerman. Together, we are advancing research to develop life-saving treatments for Long QT Syndrome (LQTS), with the goal of creating the first FDA-approved therapies for this condition.

Meet Shea & Our Mission

Shea Gloria Greenfield was born on June 20, 2022. Within hours of her arrival, her heart stopped beating, and doctors worked urgently to save her life. Genetic testing later revealed Shea had one of the most severe cases of Long QT Syndrome (LQTS) Type 2—a rare and life-threatening condition affecting the heart’s electrical system.

LQTS delays the heart’s electrical recharge between beats, putting Shea at constant risk of fainting, seizures, cardiac arrest, and sudden death. She requires continuous monitoring, including a heart monitor at night and a defibrillator nearby at all times. Undiagnosed cases of LQTS are believed to cause many instances of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and are often linked to athletic emergencies where young athletes collapse unexpectedly.

While medications like beta blockers and anti-arrhythmia drugs help reduce her risk, they are not a cure, and the danger remains. These medications also come with debilitating side effects that impact Shea's daily life, making safer, more effective treatments all the more urgent.

Shea’s diagnosis changed our family’s world overnight, but it also inspired us to act. In 2023, we launched the Hearts in Harmony Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing research and raising awareness for LQTS. Together with Dr. Michael Ackerman and his team at the Mayo Clinic’s Sudden Death Genomics Lab, we’ve established Project Shea, a groundbreaking initiative focused on developing life-saving treatments.

Now in its fourth year, Shake It For Shea has grown into more than just a gala; it’s a community effort to drive real change. From exploring cutting-edge gene-editing tools like CRISPR to developing innovative drug therapies, Project Shea is working toward a future where no family has to face the uncertainty and heartbreak of LQTS.
