In 2020, Downstage Arts sprouted to radically improve the pathways created for teens to find their futures in the arts. Created by a community of artists dedicated to improving the lives of young people through the arts, The Teen Cohort is a free program specifically designed for high school juniors and seniors who wish to pursue the performing arts in college and beyond.

Students receive weekly individual and group coaching, material selection, self tape help and mentorship. The Teen Cohort guides them every step of the way, from research through decision day, both as artists and as college hopefuls.

2023 marks our third annual showcase, where students get to live and shine in their unique artistry while presenting monologues and songs they've prepared to their families, friends and community members. This year 13 students will present 13 pieces. We are proud to announce 100% of our seniors have been placed in at least one of their top five programs. Attendance and donations support the future of The Teen Cohort, which will allow us to reach more youth, realize more dreams, and remove the barriers that exist for so many when looking towards a future in the arts.

Downstage Arts believes that any student who wishes to participate in the performing arts should have the access and support they need to be successful. By removing boundaries, students can participate in the arts and have the opportunities to tell their unique stories. We believe that art should provoke thought and invoke justice. We are dedicated to utilizing theatre in a way that gives voices to and changes the narratives of marginalized communities in Chicago and beyond.
