In Onslow County’s public schools, 44 percent of students receive free and reduced meals, according to data provided by the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.

While many organizations provide food for the weekends, longer breaks are more difficult to fill the need.

In 2024, our team and community partners were able to provide breakfast, lunch and snacks to 54 area food-insecure students for spring break. Groceries were provided to 33 area students to assist with the summer break.

In 2025, we are aiming to fill as many bellies as possible. Nearly 400 students receive weekend care packages in the Richlands and Southwest school districts. We are working to provide spring break care packages for each of them, while acknowledging that this is a lofty goal.
