Who We Are

Yu Ying is a public, International Baccalaureate World School focused on Chinese immersion for children in grades PreK through 5. Currently, we educate more than 630 students from all eight Wards of the city. Our community is diverse, open minded, high achieving, socially and globally conscious, and involved! This year we are celebrating our Sweet 16! Within our 16 years of existence, Yu Ying has been celebrated in many ways. We’ve consistently been awarded Tier 1 status by the DC Public Charter School Board. We are a Department of Education Green Ribbon School, and were selected out of 1,000 schools to be the Hanban Confucius Classroom of the Year. This fall, we were named the #1 public elementary school, 2024, in DC by Niche. And, we’re proud to be ranked on the Public School Review’s list of “Most Diverse Schools in the US,” as well as THE most diverse elementary school in DC in school year 2023-24.

Your Support Matters

While our accolades are wonderful, we’re still a public school that relies on taxpayer funding without “extras.” Each year, the waitlist to attend Yu Ying is over 500 students. We recently broke ground on a new campus that will offer our in- demand program to more students in the city. To effectively grow we need your support! While our students have been in-person for two years, the effects of the pandemic have not receded. Our students need more time and practice with Chinese language and families are eager to get back to some of the exciting programming around language and culture that make learning fun and relevant! We’ve had to hire more staff to support our students’ academic, social and emotional well-being, to provide coverage when a teacher is sick, and to keep our before and after care program running.

Every cent raised through the Gala and Auction will help us provide essential funds to support:

● Innovative student programming to accelerate Chinese language learning and boost confidence with learning a new language

● Meaningful experiences and supports for families to fully access the Yu Ying program and practice language learning at home

● Professional development focused on the IB model, language acquisition and social-emotional learning

● Additional staffing to strengthen our immersion program

● Salaries, year-end bonuses and stipends

● On-site child care
