In the United States, approximately 4,000 to 4,800 pediatric tracheostomy procedures are performed each year. The procedure is most common in infants under one year old, most commonly due to extreme premature birth and lung development requiring prolonged mechanical ventilation via a tracheostomy tube to enable the child to live in the home or community setting rather than remain hospitalized. These children require 24/7 highly specialized care in the home setting, and home health nursing is not always reliable or available requiring parents to become their child's home health nurse, often times leaving their prior place of employment to be able to do so. These children are some of the most amazing, brave, strong warriors you will ever meet, and their parents need our support as the healthcare and insurance system is failing them time and time again.

The Childhood Tracheostomy Alliance is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization composed of compassionate health care professionals and parent caregivers who are champions of medically complex kids, specifically those with tracheostomies and ventilators. Our mission is to improve the quality of life of these children and their families by improving education in the community setting so children receive the same care at home as they do in top pediatric hospitals through our Education and Transition to Home initiatives. We reduce medical waste while improving access to necessary in-home medical supplies through our Supply Closet Program, and we assist with out-of-pocket medical expenses with our bi-annual Caregiver Grant Program which provides $1,000 is supplemental funds to ten families per cycle.
