What is the Farm to Firehouse Program?

Since 2019, Food on the Stove launched Farm to Firehouse. A meal delivery service, designed to offer healthier meals at firehouses. The program has been a tremendous success, feeding over 2,000 firefighters with fresh, nutritious meals, and has attracted the support of corporate partners such as Giant, United Healthcare, and Amazon. These meals come with heart-healthy recipes and ingredients that are easy to prepare, designed to support healthier living even in the demanding firehouse environment.

This year, we're expanding the program to include pantry items and fresh produce. We are looking to source items from local farms and food vendors.

Addressing a Health Crisis

Firefighters face a unique health crisis: due to the physical rigor of their job, lack of adequate fitness training, and poor diet options, their life expectancy is 10-15 years shorter than the average worker. In 2018, 82 firefighters died in the line of duty, with 33 of those deaths attributed to heart attacks.

The nature of their work means firefighters must cook all three of their daily meals while at the firehouse. To save time and cut costs, they often rely on fast, processed meals, which contribute to hypertension, heart disease, and other serious health issues. By providing firefighters with healthy, convenient meal options, we aim to change this dangerous cycle.

Healthy Eating Can Save Lives

Firefighters cannot control the stress, hazardous conditions, or sleep deprivation inherent to their job, but they can control their diet. We believe that by providing locally sourced food and nutritional education, we can help change the culture of every firehouse. Our goal is to make healthy eating easy, affordable, and convenient, thus reducing the health risks that threaten our heroes. Ultimately, we aim to lower the number of firefighters who die from heart disease and other health-related causes each year.

How Farm to Firehouse Works

Similar to popular meal delivery services like Blue Apron or HelloFresh, Farm to Firehouse provides firefighters with high-quality ingredients and healthy recipes to make it simple to prepare nutritious meals. Each order includes fresh produce, meats, and pantry items from local farms and vendors in the Washington, D.C. area. These items are thoughtfully paired with heart-healthy recipes curated by local chefs and nutritionists.

Thanks to our strategic partnerships, we can provide these nutritious meals at an affordable price—just $10 or less per meal. This approach addresses two key concerns of firefighters: saving time and saving money, all while improving their health and wellness.
