Why does this matter—and why now?

Because the future of maternity care in Alabama is not guaranteed. And what happens next depends on whether communities like ours choose to act.

Here in the Shoals, we are deeply blessed to have more than one hospital providing maternity care—places where families can welcome their babies into the world with skilled nurses, physicians, and support teams beside them. These maternity and mother-baby units are more than hospital departments; they are essential pillars of community health, safety, and stability.

But across Alabama, that access is disappearing.

Since 1980, our state has lost a significant number of hospitals, and more closures are projected in the years ahead. Rural maternity units are especially vulnerable. When these doors close, families must travel farther, providers carry heavier burdens, and risks increase for mothers and babies alike.

Protecting access to safe, high-quality maternity care will require communities to come together—to support the hospitals, midwives, and rural family physicians who continue to serve families faithfully, often with limited resources.

That is exactly what Shoals Mom Prom was created to do.

Shoals Mom Prom is more than a celebration—it is a grassroots effort to ensure that maternity care not only survives, but strengthens. Each ticket purchased and each donation given becomes part of a community-powered effort to provide the tools, education, and support needed to sustain and improve care across our region and throughout Alabama.

Through Shoals Mom Prom, our community is actively crowdfunding meaningful, measurable change. Your support makes it possible to:

Sustain and expand Project Luna, our maternal and infant mental health initiative, ensuring families have access to emotional support and counseling during pregnancy and postpartum—when care and connection matter most.

Advance the Shoals Area Midwifery Care Clinic pilot project, helping build a sustainable, community-based model that expands access, supports providers, and improves outcomes for families across our region.

Equip area hospitals with essential, life-saving tools, including postpartum hemorrhage rapid response units, mobile fetal monitoring equipment, and nitrous oxide systems for labor comfort—resources that improve safety, expand options, and strengthen clinical care.

Provide newborn hearing screening equipment to midwives serving rural Alabama, ensuring babies born outside hospital settings receive early screening that supports healthy development from the very beginning.

Educate both communities and providers, raising awareness about the challenges facing maternity care while promoting an integrated, collaborative model that strengthens healthcare systems, supports providers, and improves morale across disciplines.

This work is sustained not by large institutions alone—but by ordinary people who understand that the health of mothers and babies shapes the health of entire communities.
