Why breastfeeding? Breastfeeding is one of the most cost-effective health interventions available, with an estimated return of $35 per every $1 invested. The World Health Organization recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life because of its significant health benefits for both mothers and infants. Exclusive breastfeeding results in reduced gastrointestinal and respiratory illness among infants (which can lead to death), and for mothers, reduced risk for some cancers, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes. In southern Africa, where EQUILACT works, the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding are even more pronounced. Unfortunately, most women in southern Africa economic necessity requires women to return to work within weeks of giving birth, and women do not have the resources they need to continue breastfeeding if desired. EQUILACT steps in here. We partner with local communities in southern Africa to identify and fund (if needed) locally driven solutions to support women who desire breastfeeding.
