20 Years of Hope: A Community United for Families Fighting Childhood Cancer

For 20 years, the Metro Area Youth Foundation (MAYF) has stood beside families during one of the most difficult journeys imaginable—hearing the words, “Your child has cancer.”

MAYF’s story began with a simple but powerful belief shared by Optimists across Nebraska and Southwestern Iowa: when a child is fighting cancer, their family should not have to fight alone.

In 2006, Optimist Clubs came together around that belief and created a network of compassion that crossed city limits, county lines, and state borders. Club by club and community by community, Optimists united behind one cause—helping families whose children were receiving treatment for pediatric cancer at Children’s Nebraska or Nebraska Medicine.

They understood that childhood cancer affects far more than a child’s health. Treatment can mean months or even years of appointments, hospital stays, missed work, long drives, and unexpected expenses. While parents focus on treatments, medications, test results, and simply being present for their child, the everyday bills do not stop.

The mortgage is still due. The lights need to stay on. Cars need gas to make another trip to the hospital. Groceries need to fill the refrigerator.

That is where MAYF steps in.

Through the generosity of Optimists, businesses, donors, volunteers, and community partners, MAYF provides direct financial assistance to help families manage those everyday expenses. Each bill paid represents something more than financial assistance—it is one less worry for a parent and a reminder that an entire community is standing beside them.

Over the past two decades, MAYF has grown, but the heart of the organization has remained the same. What began with Optimists recognizing a need has become a community-wide commitment to helping families throughout Nebraska, Southwestern Iowa, and surrounding communities.

Some families MAYF supports live just minutes from the hospital. Others travel hours from rural communities for their child's care. Their hometowns may be different and their cancer journeys unique, but they share something important: when they need help, their community is there.

And behind that community are the Optimists who started it all.

For 20 years, they have organized fundraisers, donated baskets, volunteered, sponsored events, invited others to join the mission, and continued believing that optimism is more than seeing a brighter future—it is helping create one.

Today, MAYF celebrates 20 years of hope, generosity, and neighbors helping neighbors. We honor the Optimists who had the vision to begin this work, the supporters who have carried it forward, the healthcare professionals and pediatric oncology social workers who connect families with assistance, and, most importantly, the children and families whose courage inspires everything we do.

As we celebrate this Golden Birthday, we are not simply looking back at what has been accomplished.

We are looking forward.

There will be another family who hears the words no parent wants to hear. Another parent who needs to miss work to sit beside a hospital bed. Another family wondering how they will manage the bills while focusing on helping their child heal.

And when that moment comes, MAYF intends to be there.

Because for 20 years, our community has shown what can happen when people unite around one simple promise:

Families fighting childhood cancer do not have to fight alone.

Together, we have carried hope for 20 years.

Together, we will carry it forward.
