For over 30 years, Immigrant Home English Learning Program has been a vital part of the St. Louis community, empowering immigrant families through free, one-on-one English tutoring - in students’ homes and online. Today, IHELP supports adults of all ages and children in grades PreK–5, offering a unique two-generation approach that strengthens entire families.

The majority of our students face barriers to accessing traditional education. Transportation, child care, & work schedules can make it difficult to find a way to learn English. IHELP meets students where they are by bringing individualized instruction to them, on their schedule. With the support of trained volunteers, we offer personalized lessons that help students gain confidence, connect with community resources, and build bright futures.

Since our founding in 1995, IHELP has served more than 2,100 students. In 2025 alone, IHELP served 254 students. Our students use their newfound English skills to pursue higher education, get jobs in their fields, pass the driving test, and prepare for U.S. Citizenship.

This work is needed now more than ever. Immigrant families across our region are navigating an increasingly challenging environment marked by heightened anti-immigrant rhetoric, policy uncertainty, and growing barriers to essential services. At the same time, organizations serving immigrant communities are facing one of the most difficult funding landscapes in recent memory.
