Royal Expressions Contemporary Ballet is a dance company, a school, and outreach community partner that strives to promote good character and healthy living through programs that celebrate the love and joy of dance.

The company was founded in 2009 by our fearless leader, Princess Johnson. Under her leadership, Royal Expressions has served over 350 students at our studios, over 500 students through our outreach programs and partnerships, and have performed for over 2000 audience members. She has produced seven productions and is currently producing her eighth, the Hair Journey. She is an advocate for Black artists and arts organizations in Greensboro and beyond. She has hosted leading dance leaders at Royal Expressions including Misty Copeland and Alicia Graf Mack. She is an ABT certified Ballet teacher along with two other staff members at Royal Expressions.

Royal Expressions, despite many challenges, has remained committed to their mission and have made great strides to fulfill the vision to be an innovative dance company and school that promotes healthy living. As we look forward and approach 15 years we are asking for your support to move into our next level.

On March 9, 2024, we were forced out of our space six months ahead of schedule for moving. We moved to 107 W Whittington Street, Greensboro, NC 27406. While the space is much larger, we still have some challenges in offering our dance classes, but we also have some amazing opportunities in this space.

Because of you we were able to:

Launch our Let’s Move Campaign and raise over $80,000 in 6 months

Teach dance and encourage healthy living to over 120 children ages 2 and up

Continue our 11 year old tradition of helping the community navigate grief during the most difficult time through our stage production The Christmas Shoes

Move into a 3500 square foot facility to expand our services and bring all of our classes back under one roof

Launch the Hair Journey in Greensboro and Winston-Salem with a 9 person production team, 22 performers, 6 performances, and 787 audience members from across the state and out of state

Now that we have paused to reflect and show gratitude for our accomplishments, we cannot stop here. Our journey is not over, it has just begun.

The Let’s Move campaign is still in full effect and we still need to raise $60,000.

Phase 2 of the Let’s Move Campaign is focused on upfitting our space to our needs as well as renewing our sustainability by increasing our cash reserves.

When we moved from our old location, we had to give up our professional hard sprung dance flooring. Our new space needs new flooring so that we can ensure the safety of our dancers.

We gave up some studio space, but we gained a theater space that can accommodate up to 120 guests. We want to purchase lighting for the space and get it installed so that we can use the space at its fullest potential. We dream of being a facility where producers can put their work on stage and in Greensboro this has been hard to do.

We need portable, soundproof walls, so that we can divide the large theater space into two spaces to accommodate our dance classes throughout the week. This will get us the four studios we set out to have at the beginning of our Let’s Move Campaign.

Our overhead expenses have tripled since moving and we want to ensure that we maintain a financially healthy organization. Your gift today will secure our future so that we can serve the community for many years to come.
