Place to Be Me is a not for profit organization that provides social, educational, and recreational programs serving individuals, age 6+ with a range of abilities, including those with autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, or other physical and/or developmental differences.

A Legacy of Caring & Belonging

Founded in 1909 as Children’s Dispensary and Hospital, our organization has spent more than a century serving families in our community. In the Fall of 1976, we launched our "Fun & Learn" Evening Programs, creating meaningful opportunities for individuals with special needs to build friendships, develop skills, explore new interests, and enjoy social and recreational activities in an inclusive and welcoming environment.

What began 50 years ago as an opportunity to bring people together continues today through Place to Be Me. While our name and programs have evolved, our commitment remains the same: creating opportunities for individuals with disabilities to learn, grow, have fun, and belong.

Our Programs:

Place to Be Me Programs (September - May) - Celebrating 50 years in 2026, these social and recreational programs allow individuals of all abilities experience fun in physical activities such as bowling, games, music, arts and crafts, and group activities. Programming is held Monday and Wednesday evenings, occasional Saturdays as well as family friendly events throughout the year.

PTBM: Adults - Twice each month, adults come together for fun, friendship, and meaningful experiences. From community outings and social activities to creative projects and special events, PTBM: Adults provides opportunities to build connections, gain independence, and enjoy time with friends.

Place to Be Me Summer Camp (June - July) - Big fun. New adventures. Endless memories! Our June–July Summer Camp is packed with hands-on activities, creative arts, culinary fun, exciting field trips, and plenty of opportunities to learn, explore, and make friends.PTBM: Adults - Meets twice per month for outings in the community.

Free Family Events - Fun, connection, and memories, at no cost! Throughout the year, we bring families together for free events like hayrides and s’mores, movie nights, and park meet-ups. It’s all about making memories, building friendships, and creating a community where everyone belongs.

Parent Resource Nights - Support, connection, and resources for the whole family. Held quarterly, our Parent Resource Nights give parents and caregivers a chance to connect, learn, share experiences, and access helpful information from community experts. Together, we’re building a stronger support network for families.
