Empire Dragons NYC is a founder and proud supporter of Guardians of Flushing Bay. Back in 2012, members of the Empire Dragons NYC, New York’s first breast cancer dragon boat team, were shocked and appalled by the state of water quality in Flushing Bay. Empire took action by participating in water quality testing for the Bay, initiating oyster gardening with Billion Oyster Project, and ultimately by founding the Guardians of Flushing Bay in partnership with other dragon boat teams on the Bay. We are now proud to be participating in raising funds for Guardians which has become an important environmental justice organization in NYC. Please support the important work of the Guardians and give generously to help clean and preserve Flushing Bay. Feel free to post/re-post on social media.
SaturBAY will be held at the most eastern end of the Malcolm X Promenade along Flushing Bay near the Flushing Meadows Corona Park public kayak/canoe launch. Parking is available on site and the location is within a 20 min walk of the Main St and Mets-Willets Point 7 train stations. The event will be hosted on public parkland—all Parks Department rules apply to this event, including no alcohol or smoking allowed on site.
The entire event is free and open to the public. There will be food vendors and free activities on site that may require registration. You can register through this page for those activities.
Thanks so much for coming to SaturBAY! We appreciate you for making it out to Flushing Bay despite the rain and wind, and we are always grateful to our community's dedication for showing up and celebrating our waterways.
Shoutout to Nhà Mình, Dosa Hut, and Le Petit Paris for the delicious food. Thank you to our sponsors at Barretto Consulting, Hoi Polloi, Thread Collective, Le Petit Paris, Biohabitats and NY Presbyterian for making the event possible. And thank you to folks for joining our walking tour, running in the Queens Distance Runners' Fun Run, and painting our historic stream!
If you haven't yet, please consider donating to Guardians of Flushing Bay to ensure that Flushing Waterways is clean and equitably accessible. A donation of $5 or $5000 goes a long way to achieving our vision!
Our auction for original artwork by DSNY artist-in-residence sTo Len is also ending this week—this is your last chance to get a one-of-a-kind print spotlighting the connection between the cleanliness of our roads to that of our waterways! Check out the auction page to learn more.
With gratitude and appreciation,
Rebecca + Rachel (on behalf of the GoFB Team)
