Story for Spark! Creativity's Pilot Year:

In our first pilot year, Spark! Creativity set out to ignite the creative potential of students in grades 4-12 across the Edmonds and Everett school districts. With the mission of making arts education accessible to all, we have seen firsthand how powerful art can be as a catalyst for personal and professional growth. This year, we introduced students to the transformative worlds of visual arts, ceramics, and creative writing—offering them tools to express themselves, build confidence, and explore new possibilities.

Throughout the year, our dedicated team of teaching artists worked tirelessly to bring these subjects to life in classrooms and community spaces. In visual arts, students learned not just technical skills, but how to use art as a voice for their unique stories. Whether it was through printmaking and mark-making, drawing, collage, painting, or mixed media, students explored their creativity and developed a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.

In our ceramics classes, young artists worked with clay, learning the fundamentals of sculpture and pottery. They created everything from functional bowls to imaginative sculptures, experimenting with texture, form, and color. This hands-on medium allowed students to see their ideas come to life in a way that built patience, persistence, and problem-solving skills.

Creative writing gave students the opportunity to craft their own narratives, whether through poetry, short stories, or essays. Writing became a way for them to connect with their emotions, express their thoughts, and find their voice. For many, it was a safe space to reflect on their personal experiences and develop new perspectives.

What has been most inspiring is seeing how these creative experiences have shaped our students. We’ve watched shy students step into leadership roles, students with academic struggles discover newfound passions, and all students gain a sense of accomplishment and pride in their work. These arts programs have not only opened doors for personal growth, but have also empowered students to pursue new academic and extracurricular opportunities.

The impact of this pilot year has been profound, and as we look ahead, we are more committed than ever to ensuring that arts education remains accessible to every student. With the support of our community, we are excited to continue growing Spark! Creativity, providing more students with the chance to explore their creative potential, and nurturing the next generation of artists, writers, and thinkers.
