Who is TONYC? We're a nonprofit working across New York City to partner with communities confronting systemic oppression and inspire transformative action through theatre! Our work is rooted in the Theatre of the Oppressed (TO) methodology developed by Brazilian artist and politician August Boal, and by Paulo Freire’s groundbreaking book, Pedagogy of the Oppressed. TO provides tools for communities to create original performances based on their own lived experiences, with a focus on activating the audience as agents for change. Since 2011, TONYC has developed over 85 original plays, presented more than 315 free performances, and partnered with over 24 direct service organizations. Over 725 actors have been guided through the production of plays addressing the systems of oppression that impact their lives.
