We’ve Taken a Hit — Our NEA Grant Has Been Withdrawn

National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) has officially canceled its Challenge America grant program for Fiscal Year 2026. This program previously provided $10,000 grants to small arts organizations aiming to extend the reach of the arts to underserved communities, including rural areas, low-income populations, and individuals with disabilities. The NEA is now redirecting its focus toward projects that celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States, known as the Semiquincentennial.

This policy shift has raised concerns among arts organizations, particularly those serving marginalized communities. Many of these organizations relied on Challenge America grants as a crucial source of funding. The new guidelines may pose challenges for smaller organizations that lack the resources to meet the requirements of other NEA grant programs.

Shabach Enterprise, founded in 2007, is the creator of the Fade To Black Play Festival! Our mission is to showcase the works of emerging and established Black playwrights, providing them with a platform to have their voices heard.

Shabach Enterprise is expanding into the Fade To Black Arts Festival, a groundbreaking biennial event that addresses the systemic lack of recognition and promotion for African-American artists in Texas. Taking place from June 8-14, 2025, this unified collaboration will feature simultaneous performances of African-American film, music, poetry, and theatre at various Downtown Houston venues, marking a first-of-its-kind event in the state. Not only will it celebrate our vibrant cultural heritage, but it will also have a significant economic impact, generating millions for our city.

To make this ambitious expansion a reality, we are seeking your support.

We aim to raise funds to compensate artists, interns, and mentors, as well as secure a central meeting space for festival performances. Our accomplishments so far have filled us with pride, and we are filled with excitement about the potential that lies ahead. With your contribution, we can continue to grow and expand our influence within the arts community.
