What My Community Means to Me

What My Community Means to Me is a collaborative art project created by artists from The Arc of Harrisonburg and Rockingham’s ARCessible Art Program and graduate students from JMU’s PSYC 749 course, led by Professor Cara Meixner.

Working in pairs and small groups, participants created original collage panels inspired by the people, places, relationships, and experiences that make Harrisonburg and Rockingham County feel like home.

The project was made possible with help from across the community. Massanutten Regional Library donated magazines and brochures, the Daily News-Record provided newspapers, Lowe’s of Harrisonburg donated the plywood panels, and other local businesses shared postcards, flyers, and printed materials. These donations became part of the artwork and helped make each piece a true reflection of our community.

The completed artwork is displayed at Black Sheep Coffee throughout August and sold through this online auction. Winning bidders will receive their artwork at the end of the month along with accompanying cards that go with the artwork.

Proceeds will support The Arc of Harrisonburg and Rockingham and the continued growth of ARCessible Art, creating more opportunities for artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities to create, collaborate, exhibit, and be recognized as part of the local arts community.
