Have you ever had a sick or injured alpaca, but no vet near the farm? Or maybe your vet isn't well-versed in alpaca health? You're not alone. With only 5.3% of veterinary students choosing to serve the large animal market, we are in crisis. The United States' food, fiber, and equine animals are at risk, and the need for skilled veterinarians in rural areas has never been greater.

The National Alpaca Foundation is committed to being part of the solution. Through the Dawn Stewart Memorial Scholarship Fund, we provide financial assistance to aspiring large animal veterinarians who are passionate about camelids. This year, in our first round of funding, we awarded three students $3,000 each. One of these recipients, Rayann Eaves from Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine, shared:

"I know for a fact that I would not be the person I am or the veterinarian I will be without alpacas and the industry. I feel a personal commitment to serving rural communities like the one that made me who I am."

Upon graduation, Rayann will serve as a Veterinary Medical Officer for the US Department of Agriculture and then open her own livestock practice. Stories like hers remind us of the critical importance of supporting the next generation of veterinarians.

Make a Tax-Deductible Gift Online: If you prefer, you can make a direct contribution online. You have the option to allocate your gift to one of the following funds:
- General Fund: Supports the ongoing work of the Alpaca Owners Association, Inc., including member services, industry advocacy, and educational initiatives.
- Dawn Stewart Memorial Scholarship Fund: Help us continue to support students like Rayann who are committed to serving the alpaca community and rural areas.
- Student Design Scholarship Fund: This fund supports talented student designers working with alpaca fiber, fostering innovation and creativity in our industry.
- Youth Education Fund: Our newest initiative, this fund is dedicated to fostering the next generation of alpaca enthusiasts by supporting educational programs and activities for young people through an AOA Affiliate.
