This is no ordinary walk...

We’re Kelly and Maddie — two moms connected by family, our careers, and most of all, our love for Kelly’s son, Jack. He lives with a peroxisomal (per-ox-is-ome-ul) disorder, and we’re walking together with him to the Sandy Hook Lighthouse to raise money for something our community urgently needs: research.

A rare diagnosis that changed everything.

Almost thirteen years ago, we had never heard of something called a peroxisomal disorder. However, when Jack was born with this rare, progressive, genetic disorder Kelly (and Jack’s dad, Matt) had to quickly become experts. They learned that peroxisomal disorders cause multi-system organ defects and almost always mean a child won’t survive to adulthood.

Over the years Jack, like other Warriors, has experienced hearing and vision loss, neurological issues, seizures, developmental delays, feeding issues, and liver, kidney, and bone disease that consumes many of his waking hours. Like other rare diseases, peroxisomal disorders are woefully underfunded, not well understood, and have limited to no clinical research.

Advancing research, one step 👟 at a time.

We both work in the healthcare space supporting the advancement of science, treatments, and the people who need them. And, we both serve on the Board of Directors for the Global Foundation for Peroxisomal Disorders (GFPD). The mission of the GFPD is to improve the lives of individuals with peroxisomal disorders by funding research, championing scientific collaboration, and assisting families and professionals through educational programs and support services. This cause is personal and professional for us, and this walk is our way of turning love into progress.

This is no ordinary walk. It’s a metaphor — for the research journey, and for the persistence it takes to get to something better. We're walking to raise money to fund more research on peroxisomal disorders and treatments for Warriors, like Jack.

We chose the Sandy Hook Lighthouse trail for its accessibility — so Jack could be with us every step of the way — and because it leads to a lighthouse, a symbol of hope and illuminating forward progress. Jack loves light. It brings him joy. And for families facing the daily realities of peroxisomal disorders, light also represents possibility and the potential for more.

Our goal is to raise $15,000 — one dollar for every step along the trail to the lighthouse. Each dollar is a step toward the future we hope to reach — one with more research and more answers for the families who need it most.

The GFPD has been a source of strength for our family and hundreds of others. They connect parents, caregivers, clinicians, and researchers all over the world. They support newly diagnosed families and grieving ones alike. And now, they are renewing their commitment to driving scientific research forward.
